Don't bring fruits or vegetables into the United States

One of my friends had a not-so-good experience at the US airport when returning from London and I wanted to share it with you people. He and his wife had gone on a vacation to London and they returned a few weeks back. When they were about to board the flight in London, my friend purchased some fruits to munch on the plane. But he didn't eat it there and when he got down at the US airport, those fruits were simply trashed. He was informed that travelers are not supposed to bring in fruits or vegetables from other countries to the US. He and his wife were completely unaware of this fact and were a little embarrassed with the officials sniffing and checking the fruits as if they were some kind of drugs. :)

So, if you are planning to buy some fruits or vegetables and bring them home, better drop that idea right now.

It's true. You can't bring fruits and vegetables from other countries into the US. TSnewbie, it's not just about 9/11. The authorities have been very strict right from the 80s. Some of you people would remember the Medfly problem which rocked the country in the 80s. It spread in the country thanks to a harmless Mediterranean fruit. So, it's better to abide by the law as it is meant for our own good. You can also check out the US customs website to know more details about this issue.

Thanks bobbyk for your detailed answer. I have heard a little bit about the Medfly problem but never knew it was due to a contaminated fruit. Thanks again for the information.

That was quite a news to me. I never knew it. Next time I travel, I'll keep it in mind. I think the security checks have become very strict since 9/11.
