Converting timeshare week into points

Hi everyone. Is it possible to convert a timeshare week into points? Does points system have any advantages over the regular timeshare week? Have you guys done that before? I'd like to get some input. Thanks in advance.

Thanks everyone. You all seem to have different perspectives but overall, it seems like a good bet to go the points way. All your suggestions and comments had a huge impact on my decision. I thank one and all.

When you convert your week into points, you can not only use those points to stay in the resort, but also for other purposes such as cruises, car rentals, etc. I find this very useful and I've been spending my spare points this way for a long time.

While I agree with what 54Damon had to say, I'd like to bring in an issue. This whole issue of whether to stick with conventional timeshare week or to convert it into points depends only on your preference. If you love to go on vacation during the exact same time every year, then timeshare week is your best choice. Especially, if you have children and would love to go on vacation only during the school holidays, you can choose your desired week during that period and stick to it.

But if you like to go on vacation during different times of the year, then points could come to your help. As you might know, with points in your hand, you can decide how long you want to stay (your points could be only worth a couple days during the prime season, but a whole week during off season), which resort you want to stay (a deluxe suite could cost you more points whereas you can stay in a simple room with less points), and the kind of amenities you want to enjoy. If you love to experiment with all these things, then you should go the points way. End of the day, it is you who have to decide the kind of vacation you want. Hope this was helpful.

Converting your timeshare week into points can give you a lot of freedom in choosing your vacation. No question about that. You can use your points any time you want, anywhere you want, and you can use all of the points at the same time, or you can use some of them and save the rest for future, so on and so forth. But you need to understand that points system has also got a few pitfalls. You need to be aware of them.

First of all, there is no guaranteed week or time when you can go on vacation. True; you can choose your favorite time and place, but booking is usually done on first-come-first-served basis. This means, you need to make your decision fast and book your week with your points well in advance. Moreover, points depreciate in their value over a period of time and when you try to sell them, the scenario will be no different to that of selling a regular timeshare.

I'm not advising against converting your timeshare into points, but you have to know the pros and cons of an issue before getting into it. So, consider these aspects and make a decision.

Of course you can upgrade your timeshare week to points. It's a very good option and it has its own advantages. First of all, you can go on a vacation whenever you feel like going, not when your timeshare resort allows you to go. Isn't that a great feeling? With points in your hands, you can decide whether you want to go to a top quality resort or a simple resort, whether you want to go during the red season or during the off season, and so on and so forth. Simply put, you make the decisions. So, it's always great to upgrade to points. However, if you are a little conservative about your vacations and you would want to go on vacation during a certain time of the year, I would suggest you to keep your timeshare week.
